Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.
A Historic Residence
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors after the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key policy, did not confirm his residency plans promptly after his triumph in November.
"The choice was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change there, the community will always live inside me and the work I do," he said.
Political Debate
In his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it should be a space for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his humble Astoria home.
Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants see such units as valuable lifelines as the price of rent exceeds the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
