Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
