The Two Fatalities Identified in the Providence Campus Attack as Authorities Persist in Search for Gunman.
Two students who were killed in the weekend's mass shooting in Providence were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their killer carried on following the discharge by Rhode Island officials of the single suspect of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The young woman Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.
She served as vice-president of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, the group said. Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies on social media, remarking: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, according to relatives.
Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.
What Happened
Nine more persons were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a police operation at a hotel about 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“There is a killer at large,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Sometimes you head in one direction, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”

The fatal shooting at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about thousands of bachelor's and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in this year, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
