The Duke of York gives up his honor as York's Duke.
Prince Andrew is relinquishing his honors, among them the York's Duke, he has declared in a personal statement.
He has been under growing pressure over his connections with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, with requests for the Palace to take steps against him.
That now appears to have caused the royal deciding to willingly return his designations and to relinquish membership of the Garter Order.
In his announcement he said he continued to "strongly dispute the claims against me".
"In discussion with the monarch, and my close and broader family, we have decided the persistent accusations about me distract from the responsibilities of His Majesty and the monarchy," said a statement from the royal.
"I have chosen, as I always have, to put my responsibility to my family and land first.
"I stand by my resolution five years ago to stand back from public life.
"With the King's consent, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer employ my title or the awards which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I strongly dispute the claims against me."
The royal has been involved in a range of controversies, among them a legal case he settled with the plaintiff, doubts about his finances and his association with an accused Chinese spy.
He will remain a prince - but will discontinue to be the Duke of York, a title received from his parent, the former monarch.
He had already ceased to be a "active member" and had given up the use of his royal style and no longer appeared at state occasions. His position now will be even more reduced.
His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their daughters will persist to have the honor of princesses.
Prince Andrew has been under severe scrutiny over his links with disgraced financier the financier, more in recent times featuring inquiries about when he had really severed ties.
In his television appearance, he had said that he had ended all ties with the financier after they had been seen together in the city in December 2010.
But correspondence sent in early 2011 later came to light suggesting that he had confidentially stayed in contact with him, including sending a note: "Stay in contact and we'll play some more soon!"
There had been increasing displeasure in the monarchy at the controversies that persisted to plague the royal.
Soon a late publication by Virginia Giuffre will be released which is likely to draw additional scrutiny on his involvement with Ms Giuffre and Epstein.
