Weather experts have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Continue Amid Warnings

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," stated the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be suited to fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be cold, meaning extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Advisories for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on the transport network.

Readings Expected to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Alerts Released

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this indicated the weather was likely to lead to notable consequences across medical and care provision. This includes a potential rise in the mortality rate among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is completely essential.
