Heavy Downpours Exacerbate Circumstances for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, UN Caution

Persistent precipitation over the last seven days have worsened the precarious situation of the vast number of displaced Palestinians in the region, as stated by humanitarian agencies.

"Terrible" Conditions Poses Severe Dangers

A spokesman described the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with downpours so severe that as much as 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.

"Last night was truly terrible for the residents. The heavy rains were so intense... And the gusts were so strong," noted the representative.

There is significant concern that young ones residing in makeshift shelters in wet garments will succumb to hypothermia and various illnesses.

Fatalities and Extensive Destruction

Medical officials have stated that one baby has succumbed from the cold and no fewer than 11 other people have lost their lives in building collapses caused by the harsh conditions.

Additional accounts indicate a higher fatality count. Authorities stated that numerous structures had fully given way and dozens had collapsed partially.

Aid Operations Considered Insufficient

Organizations have increased shipments of tents, warm covers and clothing after the truce commenced, but they have said there is still not enough aid reaching those in need.

"Agencies are striving constantly to deliver that assistance and to hand it out, but the size of the requirements is so immense that we are faced with thousands of individuals and minors who are truly suffering every night," warned one spokesperson.

Ongoing Concerns and Ceasefire Plans

The second phase of the truce encompasses proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the removal of military forces, and other provisions.

Humanitarian groups have highlighted the need for "increased and sustained relief to address pressing and future needs."

The war was triggered by an attack in late 2023. Subsequent actions have led to a high number of lives lost in the territory, according to medical data.
