Steven Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities through this nifty supernatural story captured wholly through the eyes of a ghost. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller holds up well even without a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has left the youth on edge. However, the non-functional line on the wall repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices providing assistance, while the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between God and Mammon, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation regarding the shamed religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. The actor portrays the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, though the lead actress succeeds to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, on Film4
