Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
