Everyday tennis enthusiasts are being offered an opportunity to win one million Australian dollars when they compete against elite players - including world number one Carlos Alcaraz - in a single-point showdown prior to January's Australian Open

Organizers of the Melbourne major have revealed the Seven-Figure Quick-Fire Competition, which will match everyday competitors against 22 professionals in a elimination competition at the tournament grounds

The Unique Tournament Functions

Competitors are set to play 'rock, paper, scissors' to decide who takes the serve or return position, and the competitor securing the point will move forward to the following stage

The winner of the event will receive approximately half a million pounds

By comparison, players who reached the final four of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won A$1.1m

The US Open hosted a restructured, separate combined gender tournament in late summer which motivated top singles players to take part, with the winners receiving one million US dollars

The Australian Open held its inaugural One Point Slam earlier this year, but the total purse was sixty thousand Australian dollars and it received minimal attention

The Russian player was the single high-ranked athlete involved, and his campaign finished when he sent the sole serving chance allowed into the net in his quarter-final

Tournament Details

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will function, but it is anticipated to emulate a comparable structure to this year's edition

The elite players will be allowed to make one service and the non-professionals on two occasions - as is the norm in traditional tennis

While it is uncertain how the pairings will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the location will be the primary court rather than the alternative court

The last matches will be held in a nighttime schedule instead of 1pm local time

Competitor Information

Local players - or foreign participants who have enrolled with the governing body - can compete in 'single-point competition' competitions at their neighborhood facilities

The winners of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a draw, with one amateur player from every region and area picked to compete in the 'grand finale' in a night session on Wednesday, 14 January

There will also be a qualifying draw in the final month which everyday players, aspiring competitors, celebrities and sports personalities can enter

It starts on the starting date and the pair of champions will qualify for the midweek 'championship match' with the additional everyday players and 10 professionals

"Regardless of your skill level, the overall victor will walk away with the prize. Entries will begin shortly at facilities throughout the nation"

Tournament officials said there were "further celebrities to be revealed shortly", while the event portal indicated "celebrities" would be involved
