Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner Claims Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The co-founders of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to independently develop this new flavor within an individual series highlighting causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent development deepens the continuing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
The co-founders maintain that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, requesting public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, which mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company that was first created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he will create other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence had been compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
