One can find numerous candidates to claim the title of “planet’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.

According to a new book, however, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.

“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required around ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of processed timber might be manufactured within a week.”

Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, which turned timber to planks using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct vessels faster compared to any other nation, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, financial and artistic supremacy in the continent and the world.

The First Genuine Industrial Device

The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component converted the circular movement into up-and-down motion for the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary movement into a lateral motion feeding the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log forward one precise increment each stroke.

“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that they operated within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing with each descending motion while advancing on every return motion. It was an astonishingly clever use of fundamental components.”
